Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to describe a novel design method to construct lattice structure computational models composed of a set of unit cells including simple cubic, body-centered cubic, face-centered cubic, diamond cubic and octet cubic unit cell.

Design/methodology/approach

In this paper, the authors introduce a new implicit design algorithm based on the computation of volumetric distance field (VDF). All the geometric components including lattice core structure and outer skin are represented with VDFs in a given design domain. This enables computationally efficient design of a computational model for an arbitrarily complex lattice structure. In addition, the authors propose a hybrid method based on the VDF and parametric solid models to construct a conformal lattice structure, which is oriented in accordance with the geometric form of the exterior surface. This method enables the authors to design highly complex lattice structure, computational models, in a consistent design framework irrespective of the complexity in geometric representations without sacrificing accuracy and efficiency.

Findings

Experimental results are shown for a variety of geometries to validate the proposed design method along with illustrative several lattice structure prototypes built by additive manufacturing techniques.

Originality/value

This method enables the authors to design highly complex lattice structure, computational models, in a consistent design framework irrespective of the complexity in geometric representations without sacrificing accuracy and efficiency.

Abstract

Purpose

In a fast-paced and hypercompetitive environment, organizational members are awash with paradoxes where they are forced to accomplish opposing goals simultaneously (“both/and”) instead of choosing one over the other (“either/or”). The literature has acknowledged paradox as a common type of contradiction in managing information and information technology (IT), but few studies have investigated how individuals can leverage paradoxical tensions. Drawing upon paradox theory, this study develops a research model that embodies a “both/and” paradigm in paradoxical tensions via analytical alignment, a paradox mindset and resilience under environmental dynamism.

Design/methodology/approach

This study examines the research model using hierarchical regression analysis with 308 analytics experts.

Findings

Empirical results find that the alignment of analytical technology and data-driven culture (AT-2DC) has a positive effect on a paradox mindset. Results also show that a paradox mindset has a positive influence on resilience. AT-2DC alignment also mediates the relationship between paradox mindset and resilience. In addition, AT-2DC alignment is more critical to a paradox mindset under a high level of environmental dynamism.

Originality/value

This study sheds light on how individuals can leverage paradoxical tensions with a “both/and” perspective and stay resilient when managing opposing demands and changes.

The purpose of this paper is to develop a relatively inexpensive and easily movable three-dimensional (3D) body scanner.

Design/methodology/approach

Multiple depth perception cameras and a turntable were used to form the hardware and a client-server computer network was used to control the hardware.

Findings

A portable and inexpensive yet quite accurate body scanner system has been developed.

Research limitations/implications

The turntable mechanism and semi-automatic model alignment caused some error.

Practical implications

This scanner is expected to facilitate the acquisition of 3D human body or garment data easily for various research projects.

Social implications

Many researchers might have an easy access to 3D data of large object such as body or whole garment.

Originality/value

Inexpensive yet expandable scanning system has been developed using readily available components.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to bridge the gap by addressing the substructures of perceived knowledge quality (PKQ) drawn upon the theory of sensemaking. It also examines interactions of the substructures which, in turn, have differing impacts on innovativeness. Additionally, this study illustrates which PKQ substructure is most affected by knowledge sharing. PKQ has become imperative, not an option, for innovativeness in the environment characterized by knowledge overload. However, there is little research on PKQ due to its abundant, variable nature.

Design/methodology/approach

The survey methodology was used to collect data. A total of 368 individuals in the USA participated in the study. The partial least squares analysis for structural equation modeling was used to test the research model.

Findings

Perceived intrinsic knowledge quality is most affected by knowledge sharing, while knowledge sharing is a critical determinant of three PKQ substructures (i.e. perceived intrinsic, contextual and actionable knowledge quality). Perceived intrinsic knowledge quality, however, is inadequate by itself and should be transformed into perceived contextual, actionable knowledge quality to produce innovativeness.

Research limitations/implications

This study addresses the shortfall of understanding the dynamics of PKQ’s substructures and unfolds theoretical links to knowledge sharing and innovativeness.

Practical implications

This study offers valuable insights to managers who face ongoing challenges in sharing knowledge and improving knowledge quality, thereby leading their quality of knowledge into innovativeness.

Originality/value

Despite growing recognition, few empirical studies on PKQ are present in the literature. This study contributes to understanding a holistic view of PKQ and its substructures with unique relationships by knowledge sharing and innovativeness.

Purpose

The purpose of this study is to address the nature of knowledge quality, describe its dimensions, and create valid and reliable instruments to measure it. Knowledge quality is proposed as a second‐order factor model which includes three dimensions: intrinsic knowledge quality, contextual knowledge quality, and actionable knowledge quality. This study also aims to examine important antecedents to and an outcome of knowledge quality.

Design/methodology/approach

Data collected from 208 project teams were used to test measures of knowledge quality and to examine a proposed research framework by using LISREL for structural equation modeling.

Findings

Results support the claim that knowledge quality has three dimensions. The results also show that functional diversity, absorptive capacity, and knowledge networks are critical antecedents that positively impact knowledge quality, which in turn has an influence on innovation.

Research limitations/implications

The research framework enables academicians and practitioners to have important insights regarding the determinants of knowledge quality and its positive impact on innovation.

Practical implications

The valid and reliable instruments of knowledge quality provide a tool to analyze the strengths and weaknesses of intrinsic, contextual, and actionable knowledge quality. This study illustrates how firms can improve knowledge quality by integrating interdisciplinary knowledge.

Originality/values

This study identifies dimensions of knowledge quality and its antecedents and consequences.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to show how firms can enhance their service quality to increase customer satisfaction and thus financial performance? In answer to this question, four factors (i.e. employees, perceived service quality, customers, and financial performance) are critical to the success of service firms. The purpose of this research is to provide a research framework that examines relationships among employees, perceived service quality, customers, and financial performance.

Design/methodology/approach

This research develops valid and reliable instruments to measure employee training, a shared understanding, perceived service quality, customer satisfaction, and financial performance. Structural equation modelling is employed to test hypotheses following the research framework.

Findings

Drawing on a sample of 129 hotels, the results of this research show that employee training has an influence on perceived service quality. A shared understanding among employees plays a critical role in enhancing perceived service quality. In addition, customer satisfaction mediates between perceived service quality and financial performance.

Originality/value

This research illustrates that management may keep the consistency and reliability of perceived service quality by increasing the capability of employees through training and a shared understanding. In the literature, the relationship between perceived service quality and financial performance has shown a mixed picture; both positive and negative influences. This research provides empirical evidence that customer satisfaction mediates between perceived service quality and financial performance. This research may help service firms understand how the important elements (i.e. employees, customers, perceived service quality, and financial performance) interact to influence the overall performance.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper seeks to present an international comparative study on cultural differences and quality practices of four countries – Korea, USA, Mexico, and Taiwan. The paper aims to present a model, which depicts the relationships among cultures (i.e. power distance and collectivism), employee empowerment, and quality results (i.e. internal and external quality results).

Design/methodology/approach

An analysis of variance (ANOVA) and a discriminant analysis were employed to test hypotheses following the research model. Using reliable and valid instruments, data from four countries were collected on employee empowerment, and internal and external quality results to test the hypotheses.

Findings

The results suggest that collectivistic cultures, not power distance cultures, make a significant difference in employee empowerment, employee empowerment plays an important role in enhancing quality results in the four countries, and successful employee empowerment practices are not uniform across countries.

Originality/value

This paper makes a contribution to revealing the relationships among cultures, employee empowerment, and quality practices at the international level of study and to evoking managerial insights to multinational firms.

Abstract

Purpose

This study aims to identify factors affecting generation Z as the early adopters of mobile commerce (m-commerce). The research seeks to explore their behavioral intention to adopt m-commerce in India with consideration of gender differences while providing empirical validation for the theory of planned behavior (TPB).

Design/methodology/approach

In this study, a modified TPB model has been used to explain generation Z’s intention to adopt m-commerce. The proposed model was tested using a survey method with a sample of 245 students from a private university in Northern India. Subgroup analysis was performed to find gender differences in the process of adopting m-commerce.

Findings

All three independent constructs have a positive influence on the behavioral intention of generation Z to adopt m-commerce. Further, the male subgroup has a lower beta value for attitude and higher beta value for subjective norm in comparison to the female subgroup. For perceived behavioral control, no significant difference in beta value across gender could be established.

Practical implications

A better understanding of generation Z behavioral intentions will be of great use to telecom companies, marketers and electronic commerce companies to formulate strategies to expedite the use of m-commerce. As gender plays an important role in attitude and subjective norms, companies are advised to target their communication tactics in accordance to gender.

Originality/value

To the best of the authors’ knowledge, this study is one of the first to test TPB and generation Z association in the context of m-commerce adoption in India. Data regarding the difference between the two genders has also shed light on the uniqueness of the context.

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to propose a extraction procedure of competitive advantage factors that a company needs to have organizational capabilities, and leads the company to make a sustainable business success. By using the proposed method, a company can conduct a self‐assessment based on the factors, and re‐design its own quality management system, then realize the competitive advantage in a target business area.

Design/methodology/approach

By collecting and analyzing the strategy data of six business areas in company A and conducting the interview to the project team in each business area for six months, the decision‐making mechanism and its pattern of the competitive advantage factors are examined, then the self‐assessment method of quality management system is proposed.

Findings

The decision‐making mechanism for competitive advantage factors is clarified. The customer value that is one of elements in the mechanism is categorized. And the analyzing method for specifying the core customer value and the organizational capability that leads customers directly to select a company's own product is established.

Originality/value

The originality of this paper is in establishing a self‐assessment method that follows the concept of “evaluation design.” This means not using pre‐established evaluation criteria for all companies in all types of business, as is done in conventional research, but rather, designing criteria based on the competitive advantage factors in a target business area and then reflecting those factors into its own quality management system.
